3 Vital Steps For Homeowners To Take After A Hailstorm

Blog

Are you a homeowner? Has there recently been a hailstorm in your area? Whether the hail was the size of golf balls or was much smaller, hail can be damaging to anything that happens to be outside. This obviously includes any vehicles that you own but it can also include your home. Although many people do not realize that hail can damage anything besides a home's windows, your roof can also become damaged by hail. Unfortunately, unlike windows or your vehicle's metal body, the damage to your roof isn't always obvious. Some things you should do after a hailstorm include:

Look for pebbles: One of the biggest signs that you are in need of hail damage roof repair may be the sudden appearance of lots of tiny pebble-looking grains around your eaves or at the exit to your downspout. It may not be obvious from the ground, but roof shingles are covered in hundreds of these tiny pebbles. When the shingle is hit by a hailstone, these protective pebbles are dislodged and get washed away by the rain. Without these granules in place, the shingles will be more easily damaged by the sun, eventually resulting in a leaky roof. If you suspect that hail damaged your roof, it's a good idea to get an inspection as soon as possible to confirm or refute these suspicions.

Measure hailstones: If the reported or measured hailstones in your area were 1" in diameter or larger, you most likely are in need of hail damage roof repair. As you might imagine, the larger in size that hail is when it falls, the more likely it is to cause damage to your roof and other property. The sooner that you're able to file a claim with your insurance company regarding these large hailstones, the sooner that you'll be able to get your roof fixed.

Get an inspection: In some instances, it's not going to be obvious to the average person when you're in need of hail damage roof repair. In order to keep costs low, your insurance company will sometimes try to deny your claim by stating that your roof wasn't actually damaged at all. If this happens to you, then you need to hire an inspector from a local hail damage roof repair company to come out and assess your work. While you might have to pay for this inspection out of your own pocket, it will be less expensive in the long run than having to cover the cost of replacing the whole roof yourself when it starts leaking due to supposedly-unrelated reasons in the near future.

The Benefits of a Flat Roof

My name is Janet, and I am a professional architect and interior designer. While I love to design and decorate homes, I have recently developed another passion. I have fallen in love with the flat roof. Most people only see flat roofs in tall buildings in urban areas, but suburban homes can have them too. You can have a roof with a living space, a garden or even a pool. You simply need to design it so that water is adequately drained, and you can enjoy your roof almost as if it were an extra room. Explore the possibilities of flat roofs with me.
